Indiana issues a learner permit from 15 years, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles links that early age to driver education: not required (needed for permit at 15 and license at 16; otherwise license at 16 years 270 days). The knowledge test is passed at 80 %; the BMV pages we read do not give a fixed number of questions, so the practice test runs 20 questions and grades them at that same percentage. A failed attempt can be repeated the next business day. The permit costs $9 and the probationary license $17.50 (fee chart revised on 1 january 2026.). Before the road test, the permit is held 6 months with 50 hours of supervised practice, 10 of them after dark. The probationary license comes at 16 years at the earliest, and the night and passenger limits that go with it last in part until 18 years. Indiana also bars drivers under 18 from using a phone while driving. The test is offered in Spanish.

If the first try goes wrong

Indiana is one of the more forgiving states on retakes. Where some states impose a week or more between attempts, the BMV only asks you to wait until the next business day. The mini-tool below shows that delay next to the pass mark for any state, opened on Indiana.

Because the BMV publishes a percentage and not a question count, the score you need depends on the length of the test you get on the day. At 80 %, a 20-question form would allow 4 misses and a 50-question form 10. Aim higher than the minimum: questions on the probationary rules and on Indiana's move-over and school bus laws catch many first-time applicants.

Indiana and Kentucky both open the permit at 15 years, while Ohio waits until 15 years 6 months. Indiana's 50-hour log is in the middle of the range, below Kentucky's 60.

The cost of getting licensed in Indiana

The BMV fee chart lists $9 for the learner permit and $17.50 for the probationary license, a modest total by national standards. Fee chart revised on 1 January 2026. Fees for duplicate cards, amendments and later renewals are separate and are not covered here. The fee comparison sets Indiana against every other state.

What the Indiana test emphasizes

The 2026 Indiana driver's manual is the base of the exam. Expect questions on right of way at four-way stops, following distance, railroad crossings, work zones and the penalties for drivers under 21 who drink. Winter appears too: snow, ice and reduced visibility on rural highways are a regular part of driving in the state, and the manual explains how to adjust speed and braking. Road signs follow the federal MUTCD, so the shapes and colors you learn here hold in every state.

Put the dates together and the Indiana timeline takes shape. A teen enrolled in driver education can hold the permit from 15 years. The permit must be kept at least 6 months before the skills exam, yet the probationary license itself cannot come before 16 years, so most learners have more than the minimum time to finish the 50-hour log at a steady pace. Without the course, the age line moves: the BMV wording is "not required (needed for permit at 15 and license at 16; otherwise license at 16 years 270 days)". That gap is the main reason Indiana families weigh a course even though the state does not impose one. The date calculator turns a birth date into the exact calendar, including the end of the first 180 days.

Questions new drivers ask

How soon can I retake the Indiana BMV knowledge test?

The BMV lets you come back the next business day, so a failure on a Friday usually means a new try on Monday. There is no long waiting period, which makes it tempting to retry without studying. A better plan is to run the 20-question practice test until you clear 80 % several times in a row, then return to the branch.

What can an Indiana driver do in the first 180 days of a probationary license?

During those first 180 days, no passengers unless accompanied by licensed instructor, licensed driver 25+ or spouse 21+ (own child, sibling, spouse allowed). Night driving is also cut: no driving 10 p.m.-5 a.m. After that period, curfews remain until 18 years, with exceptions for work, school and religious events.

Is the Indiana permit test available in Spanish?

Yes, the BMV offers the knowledge test in Spanish. The questions cover the same rules whatever the language, so studying the Indiana driver's manual in the language you will test in is the safest choice. This site's practice test also runs in Spanish with identical scoring.
