Practice questions written from the state handbook and federal rules. Not the official test.
Idaho asks for more on the knowledge test than nearly any other state: 34 correct answers out of 40, or 85 %. The Idaho Transportation Department's DMV offers the test in Spanish and makes you wait 3 days after a failure. A teen can hold a supervised instruction permit from 14 years 6 months, for $21.50; driver education is required under 17 (30 h classroom, 6 h observation, 6 h behind the wheel). The permit is held 6 months with 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night. The first license comes as early as 15 years. Plus $5 for the knowledge test. The teen license, valid 3 years, costs $30. Night rule: under 16, daylight only (5 a.m.-10 p.m.) unless with licensed driver 21+. Passenger rule: under 17, first 6 months of license: no more than one passenger under 17 (relatives excepted). The restrictions end by 16 years. The alcohol limit under 21 is 0.02.

The tool converts any state's mark into answers. On Idaho, it shows how little room 85 % leaves:

With 6 misses allowed, the practice test here becomes a reliable gauge: if you miss more than that twice in a row, you are not ready. Studying the Idaho Driver's Manual (July 2026) chapter by chapter, then retesting, works better than repeating the same questions.
One way to use the margin: count the topics you miss. If the misses cluster in one chapter, review that chapter; if they are spread out, read the manual again from the start.
Idaho against its neighbors
| Idaho | Oregon | Utah | Montana | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pass mark | 85 % | 80 % | not confirmed | not confirmed |
| Permit at | 14 years 6 months | 15 years | 15 years | 14 years 6 months |
| Licensed at | 15 years | 16 years | 16 years | 15 years |
| Supervised hours | 50 | 100 | 40 | 50 |
Idaho and Montana both license at 15 years; Oregon and Utah wait until 16 years. Oregon also asks for twice Idaho's hours.
Idaho's timeline is among the fastest in the country: a permit at 14 years 6 months, the first license 6 months later at 15 years, and the teen limits gone at 16 years. Two rules apply in between. Under 16, the night rule reads: daylight only (5 a.m.-10 p.m.) unless with licensed driver 21+. And for the first six months of the license, a driver under 17 may carry no more than one passenger under 17 (relatives excepted).
Topics that Idaho tests
Expect questions on traffic signs, right of way at uncontrolled intersections, speed on rural highways, passing, railroad crossings, school buses, and alcohol. Idaho drivers deal with mountain roads, snow and ice for several months, wildlife crossings and long distances between towns, and the safe-driving chapter covers each. Signs follow the federal MUTCD, so the "Road signs only" mode is useful practice.
The Idaho DMV gives the knowledge test in Spanish as well. With a mark of 85 %, reading the questions in the language you know best is not a detail: one misread question can be the difference between pass and fail. The alcohol limit for drivers under 21 is 0.02, a regular topic on the test.
The cost, all in
The permit is $21.50, the teen license $30. Plus $5 for the knowledge test. The teen license, valid 3 years, costs $30. Driver education is paid to the school. Each failed knowledge test adds the test fee again and the 3 days wait, so the cheapest path is to pass on the first visit. The figures on this page were read on the Idaho Transportation Department and in its driver's manual; this site is independent of the ITD and its DMV.
