Editorial and corrections policy

Teens, parents and adults use these pages to prepare a test that decides when they may drive. A wrong pass mark or an old permit age can cost them a trip to the DMV, so every state figure points back to the official page it was read on.

What we read

• the official driver handbook of each state and of the District of Columbia, in its current edition;
• the pages of each state's motor vehicle agency on permits, graduated licensing, the knowledge test and fees;
• the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for signs, signals and markings;
• the federal motor carrier rules (49 CFR parts 380 to 396) for the commercial learner's permit, and NHTSA publications for teen driving, alcohol and motorcycles.

How the questions are written

We write every question ourselves from a fact stated in those documents. We never copy a question from another practice site, an app, a book or a leaked test, and we do not claim our questions are the ones the DMV asks. Each question records the document it comes from.

Sources we refuse

Driving schools, insurers, app publishers and other practice-test sites never provide a figure here, however well they rank. A rule we cannot find on an official page is shown as "not confirmed", never filled in from memory or from another site.

Review cycle

A script re-reads every official page each month and flags any change; the handbooks are checked when a state publishes a new edition. Every page shows the date the rules were last checked.

Corrections

1. We open the official page again.
2. We correct the data file or the question and add a test for the case.
3. The pages rebuild and show the new date.

Independence
